2010 Gus Rankings: Week 3

Here are this week's Gus Rankings, just in time for tonight's game when Miami visits Pittsburgh. (Gus has no opinion; both teams are at #69 this week.) Bob Lawson's Auburn Tigers top the list with Texas, Arizona is third and seven teams claim the fourth sport. Look for the winner of Auburn/South Carolina to make a big jump next week.

And bringing up the rear...Ed Lopez' North Texas Mean Green.

I understand you normally exclude games against FCS opponents, but it seems like a loss to an FCS opponent should definitely be penalized. Thoughts?

Yeah, we talked about that a bit last year. What's tough is to find a way to impose a rule that's not arbitrary. I suppose you could include only losses to FCS opponents and not wins, but that's implicitly forcing the assumption that every FBS team is superior to every FCS team-- true in most cases but probably not all. Do losses count twice as much and wins as half? I don't know, but we have thought about it.

It's not perfect now, but I think it's better than trying to fit in a solution like the ones above.

What were your thoughts on the matter?

My thought that an implicit disadvantage should be factored in for scheduling them in the first place, perhaps minus 1. Then judge FCS teams based on their FBS record, which is most likely 0-1 or 0-2, which will punish folks that lose without really helping the ones that win. I understand some FCS teams are better than FBS teams, but ultimately the point of the ranking systems is to figure out who the top 25 or 40 teams are, and those teams should be better than all or nearly all FCS teams.
